President introduces youth as new IDLG chief

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani on Sunday introduced Mateen Baig as new head for the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) at a ceremony here.

Addressing the event attended by a number of government officials, the president said participation of the new generation in government affairs was pleasing and considered a fundamental step to ensure the relation between the state and the nation.

Addressing the new generation, the president said: “We are the generation that witnessed various storms such as the immigration, but you are a generation on whom the country’s future will be proud of and you will be the protectors to stability, national unity and solidarity among all the different groups."

The president called IDLG a communication source between the Presidential Palace and the people, saying the role of governors, district chiefs, mayors-- who work under the IDLG--was significant in this regard.

Stressing IDLG role in ensuring the rule of law, the president said the rule of law would make Afghanistan coherent.

Therefore, cooperation of IDLG with the attorney general’s office, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Justice, the Supreme Audit Office and other relevant institutions was very important, added the president.

Wolesi Jirga speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi welcomed the selection of Mateen Baig as IDLG’s new head. He hoped Baig, given his work experience and being a well-educated youth, would better manage the new post.

Baig has earlier served as deputy head for provincial affairs at the National Director of Security (NDS) for two years.
