KANDAHAR (Pajhwok): One Afghan security man was killed and another wounded after the two traded fire with NATO troops in southern Kandahar province on Saturday.
A Romanian soldier was also wounded in the exchange of fire that occurred at around 12am near the Kandahar Airfield at the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) brigade.
A security official, wishing anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the NATO forces opened fire at police at ANCOP’s compound and as a result, an ANCOP sergeant was killed and another suffered injuries.
However, the source said nothing about what prompted the incident.
A statement from the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Kabul said first the Romanian soldiers were targeted by an ANCOP’s ‘insider attacker’ and the NATO personnel returned fire in self-defense and killed the gunman.
The foreign troops have been imparting training and advising the police.
The RS statement said one Romanian soldier and one Afghan soldier were also wounded in the crossfire and both were under treatment in Kandahar.
The alliance also gave no reason behind the incident, saying an investigation had been launched.
