Afghanistan on agenda as Mattis arrives in India

KABUL.

Mattis will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, National Security Advisor Ajit K. Doval, according to te international media.

PTI reported the two sides would discuss developing new institutional mechanisms to upgrade the Indo-US defence relationship and greater strategic cooperation in Afghanistan.

While rolling out his his administration’s new policy for Afghanistan last month, US President Donald Trump had urged India to enhance development assistance to the war-torn country.

The sale of 22 Sea Guardian remotely-piloted vehicles, a $2 billion sale that could see the Indian Navy acquire the world‘s most advanced maritime reconnaissance drone, was high on the agenda, NDTV reported.

Mattis will be in New Delhi between September 26 and September 28. The Department of Defence says he will emphasise that the US views India as a valued partner, with broad mutual interests extending beyond South Asia.

He would express US appreciation for India’s important contributions toward Afghanistan’s democracy, stability, prosperity, and security, the Pentagon said.
