In a resolution, the European Parliament also commended New Delhi for using its soft power in rebuilding the war-torn Afghanistan over the past 16 years.
“The Republic of India is the largest regional donor to Afghanistan, providing some $3 billion in assistance since the Taliban government was ousted in 2001.”
According to Asia News International, the EU Parliament welcomed India’s funding for more than 200 schools in Afghanistan and over 1 000 scholarships for Afghan students.
“India has also provided assistance in the construction of critical infrastructure, such as around 4 000 km of roadways in Afghanistan,” it added.
The Zaranj-Dilaram highway, the Salma Dam, power transmission lines and the Afghan parliament building were specially mentioned in the resolution.
Expressing concern over the growing number of internally displaced persons, the resolution said Afghanistan was facing an unprecedented increase in returns from Pakistan and Iran.
