PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): At least seven people were killed and 25 others wounded in a suicide attack in the capital of Pakistan southwestern Balochistan province on Tuesday evening.
Five security personnel and two civilians were among the fatalities while the injured included eight policemen. The suicide attack was claimed by the Pakistani Taliban.
Abdul Razzaq Cheema, Quetta’s deputy police chief, said: “It was a suicide attack and a police truck parked in the area was the target.” As the security personnel boarded the truck, the bomber detonated his explosive vest.
A heavy contingent of Frontier Corps, police and other law enforcement agencies rushed to the site and cordoned it off. The bodies and the injured were evacuated to the Quetta Civil Hospital.
Dr Wasim Baig, a spokesman for the hospital, confirmed receiving six bodies and 23 injured people. Four of the injured were in serious condition, he told Dawn.
Balochistan police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari told reporters the suicide bomber walked near the back of the police truck and then blew himself up.
Less than a month ago, nine members of the minority Christian community lost their lives and 56 others suffered injuries in a terrorist attack on the Bethel Memorial Methodist Church in the area.
