PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan on Saturday for discussions with top Afghan leaders on political reconciliation and durable peace.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi, accompanied by Foreign Secretary Tahmina Janjua and other senior officials, will meet President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah.
Qureshi’s day-long trip comes a week after US President Donald Trump sought Pakistan’s cooperation on peace and stability in Afghanistan.
In a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, the US leader urged Pakistan to help bring the Taliban to the negotiating table with the Afghan government.
A week back, Qureshi had claimed Trump’s request to Prime Imran Khan for assistance on ending the Afghan conflict reflected Pakistan’s proactive foreign policy.
Pakistan has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to an inclusive Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. It says stability in the neighbouring country is in Pakistan’s interest.
Qureshi is expected to hold a trilateral meeting with Chinese and Afghan counterparts on exploring avenues of cooperation on peace, counterterrorism and progress of Afghanistan.
The foreign ministers would discuss security, political settlement of the conflict and regional cooperation. Diplomats and military officials would also attend the talks, a source confided to Pajhwok Afghan News.
Following the first ministerial meeting in Beijing in December last year, Islamabad and Kabul agreed on the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS).
