KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): The governor of southern Kandahar province says the girls’ schools will have female principals.
Hayatullah Hayat made the remarks during a meeting with officials of education department, teachers and principals.
The decision was taken in response to public demands to provide the best possible environment for their daughters, the governor told his interlocutors.
There are 19 girls’ schools in Kandahar – five primary – three secondary and two seminaries. Nineteen female principals and 852 teachers are working at these schools, where 83,000 girls are studying.
Governor Hayat said he was striving hard to bring reforms to education in Kandahar and efforts were underway to resolve all the issues facing the vital sector.
He made clear that corruption and illegal activities in the education sector were unacceptable. Education must be divorced from politics, he stressed.
Education Director Eng. Abdul Qadir Paiwastoon told Pajhwok Afghan News efforts were being made to separate schools for girls and boys.
Several female principals would be hired to make sure that girls were provided an environment where they studied with undivided attention and without any fear.
He informed 375 schools were functional but 98 others in remote areas remained closed. Lack of buildings, textbooks, delays in paying teacher salaries were the main problems affecting education of Kandahar.
Mohammad Hakim Ulfat, a resident of Kandahar City, welcomed the appointment of female principals. He believed it many families would send their daughters to school.
