Kandahar meeting stresses education sector reforms

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Education sector has been facing problems in southern Kandahar province but reforms in the sector are impossible without public monitoring and oversight, the governor said on Thursday.

Governor Hayatullah Hayat was addressing a meeting with education officials, teachers, tribal elders, religious scholars and women.

He termed the governor’s house, the education department and the people as three important pillars and asked the meeting participants to discuss issues related to the education sector in order to find solution to them.

He said there was a district where $1,700 was spent one each student but the result was zero.

Hayat said a total of 332,617 students were getting education in Kandahar --- 50 percent low compared to Nangarhar, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif.

He also deplored only a few students from Kandahar were able to pass the university entry test every year.

The residents of Kandahar are unhappy over the current state of education affairs in the province and demand reforms and up-gradation of the sector.

Abdul Ghafoor, local elder from Ghorak district, said schools in their district were closed and their students deprived of education.

Shams Kamran, a resident of Kandahar City, said the education sector had been the victim of widespread corruption.

He demanded the interference of the president to uplift the education sector of Kandahar.
