KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations on Sunday asked all stakeholders and actors to demonstrate their commitment to completing the presidential election process in a credible manner

Election bodies, political parties, the government, candidates and their supporters were urged to protect the integrity of the process, especially with regard to tabulating and announcing the results.

In a statement, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said it was encouraged by the people who turned out to have their voices heard on September 28 and to vote for their next president.

“UNAMA urges all stakeholders to have an accurate understanding of the tallying process before making comments,” the statement added.

The IEC were asked to ensure all stakeholders understood the tallying process, including by explaining the process in definitive terms. All stakeholders share responsibility for the credibility of the elections.

The mission said the electoral authorities had put in place measures to ensure transparency, encourage observer organisations, political parties, candidates and voters to play an active, informed and constructive role in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

“Any citizen suspecting or witnessing fraud has a civic obligation to file a complaint with the relevant Afghan authorities, especially the ECC,” the statement said.

In case of credible allegations, it said, law enforcement agencies should investigate expeditiously and, where appropriate, prosecute those responsible.
