PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): Hundreds of residents of Markazi Baghlan district of northern Baghlan province in a gathering welcomed the Reduction in Violence (RiV) week and asked warring parties to agree on a permanent ceasefire.

The RiV week between the Taliban, US and Afghan government started on February 22 after over a year of negotiations between the Taliban and US.

A peace deal is expected to be signed between the US and the Taliban at the end of the ongoing seven-day RiV period in Qatar on February 29.

Residents of Markazi Baghlan district of Baghlan province on Wednesday were gathered in large numbers to celebrate the reduction in violence period across the country.

Arbab Shamsullah, one of the participants of the gathering told Pajhwok Afghan News, “I thank the Taliban for agreeing to reduce violence for a week and their commitment for peace.”

He said that they were very happy about the peaceful period as no attacks happened in their region in the last five days.

Mirwais Jahadyar, another participant of the event and a former Hizb-i-Islami Afghanistan commander said that the Taliban were committed for peace but they should also agree on a permanent ceasefire.

“Peace is very close, we need to support the government, we are against the idea of creating another government, supporters of a parallel system should also support peace,” he said.

A number of other participants of the gathering held similar views and asked warring sides to agree on a long-term ceasefire.

Participants of the gathering also organized a dance party to celebrate cease of war for week in the country.
