Ghani orders tight security for religious scholars

KABUL in Kabul, President Ashraf Ghani on Monday directed security organs to take effective steps for the protection of religious scholars.

In the last 10 days, prominent religious scholars Dr. Ayaz Niazi -- prayer leader at the Wazir Akbar Khan Mosque at the Sher Shah Suri Mosque -- have been killed along with several other worshipers in bomb blasts.

Sediq Sediqi, spokesman for the president, tweeted that Ghani underlined the need for the security of religious scholars at a cabinet meeting today.

He said the president instructed security organs of the country to make all possible efforts for the protection of ulema and other religious figures.

“In addition to the safety of citizens, the president said the protection of ulema is main responsibility of the security organs,” he added.

Sediqi said the president condemned the attack that killed the Sher Shah Suri Mosque imam and other worshipers.
