KABUL.

In an explosive report on Monday, The New York Times contradicted Trump’s assertion that he had not been informed by the intelligence community of the Russian bounties.

The influential newspaper quoted unnamed officials as saying the claim had been part of a written version of the president’s daily briefing in late February, according to AFP.

Meanwhile, CNN also verified the report, but said the document was produced in the spring.

Separately, the White House briefed some Republican lawmakers on its stance but Democrats have called for all members of Congress to be briefed by the intelligence fraternity.

In a letter to National Intelligence Director John Ratcliffe and CIA Director Gina Haspel, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: “The questions that arise are: was the president briefed, and if not, why not, and why was Congress not briefed,”

Also on Monday, the Pentagon said in a statement it had “no corroborating evidence” for the allegations concerning the Russian offer of bounties to the Taliban.
