KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States of America is close to recording 200,000 Covid-19 fatalities, fresh statistics from a leading university show.
Figures from the Johns Hopkins University indicate 199,743 Americans have lost their lives to the pandemic so far. As many as 6.8 million US citizens have been infected.
The US has seen the highest death toll in the world for months, followed by Brazil and India, with 136,895 and 87,882 deaths respectively.
Meanwhile, confirmed coronavirus infections in Mexico have crossed the grim milestone of 700,000, despite two months of slowing infection rates.
Reuters reported 2,917 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the Latin American country. The total thus rose to 700,580 as well as a cumulative death toll of 73,697.
