HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents have blown up a major highway bridge in western Herat province, an official said on Saturday.
Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants had planted four explosive devices under the bridge in Zawal district on the Herat-Kandahar highway.
He said the security forces defused three of the landmines but the fourth exploded before being defused, destroying part of the bridge.
Meanwhile, the security forces recovered more than 100 kilograms of explosives in Guzra district, Farhad informed.
According to another report, three children were injured as a result of an explosion. He said the children were on their way home when the blast occurred.
Farhad blamed the Taliban for planting the landmine in the area. However, there was no immediate reaction from the militant movement.
