KABUL (Pajhwok): US defence secretary Mark Esper has been fired by outgoing president Donald Trump.

Trump announced the action in a tweeted, hailing the secretary’s services in his administration.

I am pleased to announce that Christopher Miller, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center (unanimously, confirmed by the Senate), will be acting secretary of defense, effective immediately..”

Miller, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, has been appointed acting defense secretary, Trump said.

A number of US media outlets reported that Esper was removed by Trump following some differences.

Sources said during recent protests Trump asked Esper to use troops against them but he rejected the demand. There were differences between Esper and Trump on Afghanistan and Iraq.
