Ghani: Women given significant role in peace process

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani says equality between men and women and protection of women’s rights is a basic principle for the government and fighting violence against the gender a top priority.

President Ghani made these remarks in a message issued on the occasion of the International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women on Wednesday.

The government has always tried to remove barriers to women’s empowerment and to provide them with proper opportunities for development, the president said.

The president said the Ministry of Women’s Affairs has been an important institution raising awareness, monitoring, counseling and access to women’s rights and justice for victims of violence. The ministry played a purposeful role in the areas of enlightenment and justice for women.

Ghani said equality between men and women and protection of women’s rights was a fundamental principle for the state and the fight against violence was one of its top priorities.

“Women are the main victims of the war in the country. They are more interested in peace and stability. The government has tried to give them a greater role in this process. The active and broad role of women in the composition of the Peace Consultative Loya Jirga and the Afghan government’s negotiating team in Doha is clear evidence of the government’s claim.”

According to the message, the government tried to address problems facing the advancement of women and to design, approve and enforce certain laws and regulations in the field of legislation to improve the status of women in the country.
