Swelling garbage heaps irk Shash Darak dwellers

KABUL (Pajhwok): Some residents of the 9th district of Kabul province have been complaining about the existence of huge garbage heaps in their areas and accusing municipality officials of negligence in transferring the swelling piles.

Abdul Sabur, a resident of Kabul’s ShashDarak district, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Kabul municipality was not paying attention to collecting and transporting garbage out of the area and as a result people were facing many problems.

He pointed to a garbage dump near the door of his alley and said:  “Every year we ourselves transport garbage out of the city. But this year, security officials guarding the presidency, foreign offices and a national security directorate near our region do not allow us to rent a car and transfer garbage.”

He said the Kabul Municipality’s cleaning department did not pay any attention to the transfer of garbage in the area.

Mohammad Wais, another resident, said 200 families lived in their area and all faced the same problem. “Believe me, the garbage dumb has increased so much that it is difficult to open the alley gate. Bad smell from the garbage has annoyed everyone. If this problem is not addressed, the majority of people in this area will fall sick. “

Bahraddin, the imam of a mosque in the area, also expressed his concern about the existence of garbage dumps in every corner of the area.

He said every year people used to transfer garbage away, but now the amount of garbage was so high and people were not able to transport it. “The municipality must cooperate with us to get rid of this garbage.”

Public representative Haji Abdul Mujib Safi said due to the arrival of winter, the issue of increasing garbage could not be solved.

He added he had raised the issue with the Kabul Municipality and the problem would be addressed in near future.

Pajhwok Afghan News tried to get a response from the Kabul Municipality Press Office, but failed.
