KABUL (Pajhwok): Minister of Foreign Affairs Haneef Atmar has urged the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ramp up support for the Afghan peace process.

Atmar, speaking at the 47th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Niamey, the capital of Niger, called on Muslim scholars to condemn “unjustified” violence in Afghanistan

He said: “We urge you all to join hands and support the Afghanistan peace process and to encourage ulema across OIC member states to condemn the violence in Afghanistan and support of the peace process.”

Voicing his concern over the uptick in violence across the country, the minister said the Afghans continued to suffer violence at the hands of terrorist enemies on a daily basis.”

Noting rising attacks on civilians in recent months, he said: “In Kabul alone, we have seen levels of attacks on civilian targets that are unprecedented — from a killing spree in a maternity hospital to a suicide bombing inside a classroom full of young students at a private education facility, to a large-scale attack on Kabul University.”

He also condemned the targeted killing of moderate scholars, human rights activists and journalists as an act adding to the frenzy of violence.

Atmar asked the OIC and its member states, with influence on the Afghan peace process, to keep pushing the Taliban to pursue peace and an end to the conflict.
