KABUL (Pajhwok): China has asked Australia to apologise to the Afghan people for alleged crimes against humanity by the Aussie troops in the conflict-torn country.
According to The Morning Star, Beijing also scorned on Monday Australian demand for an apology for posting an image depicting war crimes in Afghanistan.
On Sunday, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison asked China to apologise after Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian tweeted a cartoon showing a grinning soldier on an Australian flag, holding a knife to an Afghan child’s throat.
“Shocked by murder of Afghan civilians and prisoners by Australian soldiers. We strongly condemn such acts and call for holding them accountable,” Zhao wrote.
He was commenting on an Australian war crimes report, which found Australian troops unlawfully killed 39 Afghan prisoners, farmers and civilians.
Morrison said Zhao’s tweet was “utterly outrageous” and demanded an apology from China.
On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Australia should “reflect deeply, bring the perpetrators to justice … and solemnly promise they will never commit such crimes again.”
