CHARIKAR (Pajhwok): Salang highway, linking Kabul with northern Afghanistan, has been closed for cargo trucks due to heavy snowfall and storms, an official said on Monday.
Samiullah Walizada, the highway maintenance commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News the key route was closed for cargo trucks as a result of heavy snowfall at around 11pm on Sunday night. However, passenger vehicles can travel on the highway.
According to weather forecast, the snowfall will continue for the next 24 hours.
He said 16 centimeters of snowfall was recorded in the northern part of the highway and 15 centimeters in the southern portion.
The officials of the highway urged the passengers to carry all the necessary tools such as warm clothes, tire chains, extra engine oil and food while traveling the highway.
In the winter, traveling the busy highway is dangerous for passengers due to heavy snow and cold weather conditions.
