JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A new-constructed market for fruits and vegetables was inaugurated in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday.
The market that consumed $4 million has been constructed in cooperation with the private sector and local officials say it would provide work opportunities for hundreds of people.
The market has been built for farmers of western districts of Nangarhar by former Jalalabab mayor Lal Agha Kakar, said provincial agriculture and livestock director Inamullah Safi.
He said farmers in Sararud, Khogyani, Hesarak and Sherzad districts of Nangarhar and Qarghai district of Laghman province would transport their agriculture goods to the markets.
Kakar said he spent $4 million to buy land and construct shops and small cold storages. He said the market would not be used for buying and selling fruits and vegetables but also for preservation of agriculture products.
“I built this market because when onions are harvested, they are exported to Pakistan and then we buy the same onions against a higher price.”
Khwaja Mohammad, who owns a shop in the market, said the facility would create work opportunities for many people.
