Kabul attacks a failure of security institutions: Rahmani

KABUL (Pajhwok): Wolesi Jirga Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani on Wednesday expressed his concern over the security situation in capital Kabul and said security organs should reassess their policies and apologize for their inabilities.

Speaker Rahmani lambasted security institutions amid an uptick in bomb blasts and targeted attacks in Kabul in recent days.

In a fresh incident on Wednesday, two people were injured in a blast on a Hilux type vehicle in the limits of 11^th Municipality District of Kabul City.

On Tuesday, Kabul’s deputy governor and his personal assistant were killed in a blast in the ninth Municipality District of the City.

According to Rahmani, the surge in incidents of violence in Kabul had caused public unrest and the recent blasts and attacks determined the failure of security institutions.

“The security sector should reassess their policies and tender apology for their inabilities. We want the government to introduce capable and strong people to the security sector,” he said.

He said the 6:30am meetings yielded not result and it would be better to strengthen security institutions.

Over the past two months, First Vice President Amrullah Saleh has taken over responsibility of Kabul security and he daily holds meetings at 6:30am.

Belqis Roshan, a lawmaker from Farah province, said citizens and officials were daily targeted in armed attacks and blasts and security officials should be held responsible for this.

Erfanullah Erfan, a lawmaker from Kabul, said Kabul police chief was incapable and added security forces were unable to prevent daily attacks, urging the people to cooperate with the government in this regard.

Kabul Police Spokesperson Firdos Faramarz acknowledged the worries of lawmakers about security situation in Kabul and added security personnel were trying to improve the situation under Security Charter mechanism.

He said crimes had 90 percent decreased in Kabul and police were making efforts to bring down the level of terrorist attacks as well.

He said 140 people had been arrested in the past one month in connection with plantation of landmines and terrorist attacks.
