SHIBERGHAN (Pajhwok): The National Food Program targeting 45,000 families was launched in northern Jawzjan province on Monday, with 430 families receiving food in the initial package.

President Ashraf Ghani inaugurated the NFP on July 19 and he had said that food items worth $244 million would be distributed to vulnerable families.

The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) on December 15 said that more than 20,000 families suffering from poverty benefited from the program and its first phase would be launched countrywide in the next three months.

The program was also launched in Jawzjan on Monday.

Mulavi Lotfullah Azizi, on his last day as governor of Jawzjan, said that NFP equally benefited all people without categorizing them.

He said 45,000 people would be distributed food items worth 4,000 afghanis each in the province and 430 families received the aid today.

Eng. Mohammad Yousuf Sayeed, provincial rural rehabilitation and development director, said that the NFP would be implemented in three phases in the province.

He said that the first phase would be implemented in areas under NFP coverage and the second phase would be implemented in areas of National Solidarity Program.

The aid recipients demanded continuation of the program. Lal Mohammad, a differently-abled person who received the food items, was happy and said, “We are poor people and this food is very helpful for our family.”

He welcomed the program and said most of those being covered by the program were poor people and in need of assistance.
