1 prisoner killed, 5 injured in Faryab jail infighting

MAIMANA (Pajhwok): One prisoner was killed and five others injured in infighting at the central prison in northern Faryab province yesterday, officials said on Friday.

Faryab police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurash told Pajhwok Afghan News the incident took place on Thursday afternoon when a verbal dispute broke out between the inmates.

He said one prisoner was killed and five others were injured in the incident. According to Yurash, the inmates planned to break down the prison’s gate and escape, but prison guards frustrated their attempt.

Another reliable source, who did not want to be named, said the clash erupted between two groups of inmates at the jail.

The source said the clash took place when a prisoner from one group joined another group. He identified the dead man as Arif, charged with murder. According to the source, seven people were injured in the clash, most of whom were shot by police, but Faryab police have not commented in this regard.
