Govt to facilitate Ghazni elections, says Ghani

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has said the government is committed to the principle of election in the country and would facilitate provincial council, district council and Wolesi Jirga elections in southern Ghazni province.

A statement from the Presidential Palace received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that the president met with Independent Election Commission (IEC) members and heard their plans about provincial council, district council and Wolesi Jirga elections in Ghazni province as well as elections of municipalities in the country’s major cities today morning.

The statement said that IEC commissioners showed their preparedness for holding the mentioned elections across the country.

Ghani welcomed IEC plans for the elections and said the government was committed to the principle of election and would provide resources for conducting the democratic exercise.

For practical follow up of these plans, regular meetings would be organized with relevant organs and ministries, he said.

This comes as the IEC earlier had announced that the commission would conduct provincial council and Wolesi Jirga elections in Ghazni province in October 2021.
