Taliban’s strategy remains unchanged, says Iran

KABUL (Pajhwok): Foreign Minister Mohammad Haneef Atmar and Iran Iran's Special Envoy for Afghanistan Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian have discussed the latest developments in the Afghan peace process.

A Taliban delegation, led by their political office head Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, traveled to Tehran last week and met several officials, including Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif.

Iran's special envoy briefed Atmar on Taliban's visit to Tehran. He noted that Taliban's stance had not changed, and their strategy was the same as before, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.

Atmar appreciated the briefing by the Iranian diplomat and alleged the Taliban kept violating their commitments to a cut in violence. He also accused the militant movement of still having ties with terrorist groups and failing to keep its freed members from returning to the battlefield.

Both sides exchanged views on strengthening regional censuses in support of the intra-Afghan peace negotiations in Doha.
