KABUL (Pajhwok): The Afghanistan Telecommunication  Regulatory Authority (ATRA) on Saturday announced collecting 4.6 billion afghanis from the 10 percent tax on telecom services this year — 300 million afs up over last year.

ATRA Head Umar Mansour Ansari told reporters here that of 34 million SIM cards distributed 22 million were active.

He added 4.6 billion afs revenue was generated from the 10 percent tax on telecommunication services in the outgoing solar year, which was 300 million more compared to the previous year.

He said 12.8 million people used the internet in the country and 80 percent of illegal SIM cards had been halted.

Ansari said five telecommunication companies had been fined 70 million afs over illegal sale of SIM cards.

He said ATRA in last fiscal year sent 1.2 billion afs revenue to the government’s treasury.

He said 1,200 mobile signals distributing towers faced security threat in which 300 were completely or partially destroyed.
