KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has said if the Afghanistan peace process fails, Pakistan will suffer more than anyone else.
Virtually addressing the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit on Thursday, the president asked the organization that its support for a comprehensive ceasefire in Afghanistan was needed to speed up the ongoing talks in Doha.
“We, the people of Afghanistan, have been deprived of our basic right to peace for decades”.
ECO has ten members, including Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Turkey.
“The time has come to end the violence that has turned our beautiful country into a killing field,” the president said.
He believed Pakistan could play an important role in bringing lasting peace to Afghanistan.
“If the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan fails, Pakistan will suffer more than any other country," he said.
Ghani said now a golden opportunity existed to bring political stability to Afghanistan through a political settlement.
However, he reiterated that the next presidential election should be held under the auspices of the international community.
