KABUL (Pajhwok): Former governor of Herat Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani, who also served as Independent Election Commission (IEC) chief, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison each along with seven others, for misuse of authority.

They were also fined 800,000 afghanis, said the Primary Court for the Investigation of Serious Crimes in its verdict. The court proceedings happened in the presence of the competent legal prosecutor.

The court handed down the verdict in the absence of Ahmad Yousaf Nuristani and his associates, who were accused of misusing their authority.

Nuristani, the son of Ahmad Khan, is a member of the Meshrano Jirga and has served as the governor of Herat province. He was sentenced to two years and six months in prison.

The court also sentenced each of the following individuals to two year and six months in prison:

Mohammad Nader, son of Mirza Abdul, director of agricultural services for Injil district, Farid Ahmad, son of Mohammad Tahir, an NDS officer, Abdul Zahir, son of Qari Nasar Mohammad, director of land authority for Ghorian district, Syed Abu Bakar, son of Mohammad Sidiq, finance manager for Injil, Ghulram Rabbani, son of Ghulam Ghaus, an employee of foreigner registration at Torghundi port, Wakil Ahmad, son of Jan Mohammad, former director of property for Injil, and Bashir Ahmad, son of Mirza Ali Mohammad, executive director for the same district.
