HERAT (Pajhwok): Governor of western Herat province on Wednesday said 85 per cent construction work of Pashdan Dam has been completed and the project would be able to irrigate 18,000 hectares of land and produce two megawatts of electricity when put into service.

Herat Governor, Sayed Abdul Wahid Qatali after visiting the construction site of the project, said some parts of the dam were still under work.

Pashdan dam is one of the main sources of irrigation for the green areas of Herat city, the provincial capital.

Some of Herat residents hailed the progress in the dam’s construction and voiced on the government’s opponents to avoid attacks on the project.

Haji Malem, a resident of Herat province, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they will defend water dams with their blood and asked the government to pay more attention to water management.

Pashdan dam is located in Karkh district of western Herat province and its construction work had begun in 1390 solar year.

Around ten days ago, Taliban had attacked the dam. They killed three security personnel, wounded one while four others had gone missing.

This comes as President Ghani and high ranking government officials inaugurated Kamalkhan Dam in southwestern Nimroz province today.

Herat officials and citizens hailed implementation of infrastructural projects by installing billboards in different parts of Herat city and organizing dance parties.
