KABUL (Pajhwok): Afghan National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib on has underlined that Afghan security forces needed financial backing to defend Afghanistan against the Taliban and other terrorist groups, not the presence of US troops.
Speaking to Hudson Institute’s South and Central Asia Director, Husain Haqqani on Tuesday, Mohib said all the Special Forces from the army, police, and NDS had been brought together under one command in preparation for the withdrawal of US and NATO troops.
Meanwhile, he said the Afghan forces had acquired the full capability and skills to defend Afghanistan.
“We do not have an obstacle with capacity anymore,” he said. What is needed and must be guaranteed is that we can maintain Afghanistan’s security. Can the Afghan government do this on its own resources? No!”
“If the United States focuses on funding Afghan forces instead of keeping its troops in Afghanistan, both countries will benefit,” he added.
Mohib also pointed out that this winter has been “the bloodiest of all.” The Taliban changed tactics and continued their violence throughout the country, and ANDSF defended the country solely. Air support was occasionally requested from the United States.
“We cannot make peace unless we are prepared for war,” he said.
