JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Taliban militants blew up a bridge on the Kabul-Jalalabad second-lane road in the Surkhrod district of eastern Nangarhar province last night, the provincial media office said on Friday.
The bridge was dynamited after the rebels attacked a checkpoint in the Fatehabad area of Surkhrod district, the Nangarhar media office said.
It said the road was used by people from Sararud, Khogyani, Sherzad and Hesarak districts as well as the second Kabul-Jalalabad highway.
Faqir Mohammad, a resident of the area, told Pajhwok Afghan News that dozens of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the bridge until 9am, but then Afghan army soldiers temporarily repaired the damaged bridge and reopened the road to traffic.
Although government sources blame the incident on the Taliban, the rebels have not yet commented in this regard.
