Taliban asked to resume talks, attend Istanbul summit

KABUL (Pajhwok): Ahead of the Istanbul summit on Afghanistan, diplomatic efforts are ongoing to resolve differences between the United States and Taliban.

A series of meetings involving representatives of the United States, Qatar, United Nations, Turkey and Taliban took place in the Gulf state in recent days.

Some progress has been achieved in patching up the rift between the Biden administration and the militant movement, a private TV channel reported on Monday.

US President Joe Biden’s announcement of withdrawing American forces from Afghanistan by September 11 is a breach of last year’s Doha peace pact, claim the Taliban.

The movement wants the US to pullout its troops by May 1, as stipulated in the peace agreement signed between two sides on February 29, 2020.

TOLOnews quoted unnamed sources as saying the discussions were aimed at creating an environment of trust between the US and the Taliban.

The Taliban were assured the commitments made in the Doha pace deal would be honoured by Sept. 11 if they resumed talks and agreed to attend the Turkey conference,.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has also launched efforts to convince the insurgent group to remain engaged in the stalled peace talks with the Afghan government.
