KABUL (Pajhwok): Top Turkish, Pakistani and Afghanistan diplomats have urged the Taliban to reaffirm their commitment to achieving a negotiated settlement in Afghanistan.
After their trilateral meeting Istanbul on Friday, the three foreign ministers underlined the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire in Afghanistan, Al Jazeera reported.
In a joint statement, the ministers said a lasting ceasefire was needed to end the ongoing violence and provide a conductive atmosphere for peace negotiations.
They also conferred on the postponement of the Turkey conference, aimed at fast-tracking an agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban.
At a joint news conference, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu promised Ankara’s support for the Afghan peace process and efforts to organise the conference in Istanbul would continue.
Flanked by Pakistani Foreign Minister Shan Mahmood Qureshi, he said: “As the co-organisers, we are continuing talks on this with all sides.”
On medical grounds, Afghan Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar could not attend the meeting. Instead he joined his counterparts through a video link, Cavusoglu explained.
“Grateful to my brothers Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Shah Mahmood Qureshi for supporting a peaceful, sovereign, united and democratic Afghanistan,” Atmar tweeted.
