KABUL (Pajhwok): The top US military commander in Afghanistan has warned the Taliban against attacks on international troops still stationed in the country.

Earlier, the Taliban said they would attack foreign troops following the expiry of the May 1 deadline for their pullout in line with the 2020 peace deal between the US and the rebel movement.

Soon after an attack on an airfield in southern Kandahar province, Gen. Scott Miller issued the warning to the insurgents.

As the May 1 date for the exit of international troops passed on Saturday, security was ramped up across Kabul to deal with a possible reaction from the militant movement.

A spokesman for US Forces in Afghanistan posted a Twitter video, in which Gen. Miller said it would be a mistake (on Taliban’s part) to attack foreign forces.

He added: “Make no mistake, we have the military means to respond forcefully to any type of attacks against the coalition and the military means to support the (Afghan) security forces.”

Meanwhile, hectic efforts are underway to convince the Taliban to return to talks with the Afghan government and accept the extended stay of foreign troop.
