KABUL (Pajhwok): A survey by the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) and the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes shows that poppy cultivation increased by 37 percent in Afghanistan last year.
A joint statement from the mentioned sources received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that the two organizations launched a survey about poppy cultivation and production in 2020.
It said that 224,000 hectares of land was cultivated with poppy in Afghanistan last year, which showed a 37 percent increase in the cultivation compared to 2019.
In 2020, 6,300 tons of poppy was produced in the country which shows that the plant is grown in most parts of Afghanistan, the statement added.
The statement said that the survey involved Remote Sensing technology and modern analytical models which contained high accuracy.
