KABUL (Pajhwok): The High Council for National Reconciliation chairman has underlined the need for a permanent ceasefire to end the conflict in Afghanistan.

Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, hailing Taliban’s announcement of a three-day Eid truce on Monday, said temporary ceasefires did not offer a permanent solution to the country’s problems.

In a statement from his office, Abdullah — the government’s chief peace negotiator — called for a comprehensive ceasefire to end the war.

The HCNR chief added: “We believe that the solution to the current crisis in the country is to speed up negotiations, declare a permanent ceasefire and end the war.”

Abdullah recalled the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan had previously declared unilateral ceasefires on Eid days and special occasions.

There was no military solution to Afghanistan’s crisis, he believed, saying the experience of the last four decades had proved that violence and killings added to the depth of the crisis and conflict.

Abdullah urged the Taliban to resume peace talks, announce a permanent ceasefire, end the war and find a political solution acceptable to all parties.
