KABUL (Pajhwok): The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Saturday said 654 new positive Covid-19 cases and 20 deaths from the infection were registered in the last 24 hours in the country.

The ministry in a statement said 2,871 people underwent tests since Friday and the virus was detected in 654 people, pushing the overall tally to 70,761.

It said 234 cases were detected in Kabul, 132 in Balkh, 60 in Kandahar , 49 in Logar, 34 in Helmand, 26 in Laghman, 24 in Nimroz, , 21 in Takhar, 15 in Kunduz, , 11 each in Kunar, Zabul, 10 each in Maidan Wardak, Nuristan, nine in Nangarhar, six in Ghazni, and two in Faryab provinces.

At least 162 individuals recovered during the period, taking the recoveries to 57,281.

The ministry said 20 people lost their lives to the virus during the period, with the total death toll reaching 2,919.

The rising cases prompted the government to close down all educational institutes and asked people to strictly follow health guidelines.
