32 dead as trains collide in Pakistan’s Sindh province

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): More than 30 people have been killed and 64 others injured in a collision between two passenger trains in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

Officials said the deadly train collision occurred following the derailment of near the Dharki area of Ghotki district late on Monday.

A Pakistan Railways spokesperson said the a Millat Express train, heading from Karachi to Sargodha district of Punjab, derailed and fell across the track.

Subsequently, it collided near the Raiti railway station with another train that was coming from the garrison town of Rawalpindi.

With a relief train reaching the scene from Rohri, local officials and police launched a rescue operation, the spokesman told reporters.

Dawn reported up to 20 passengers were still trapped in the wreckage of the Millat Express train. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the people crying for help.

At least 32 were killed and 64 others injured in the train crash, said Ghotki police officer Umar Tufail, who feared the death toll could surge.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the railway minister to reach the site and ensure medical assistance to the injured and support for the victims’ families.
