PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has postponed the Afghan Peace Conference hours after an exchange of barbs between the estranged neighbours.
“New dates of the conference will be announced later,” the Foreign Office (FO) in Islamabad announced on Friday.
Also on Friday, President Ashraf Ghani reportedly called for the cancellation of the conference at a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Tashkent.
Addressing a regional connectivity event in Uzbekistan, also bitterly, Ghani lashed out at Pakistan for aiding Afghan Taliban.
Another reason for the postponement of the peace conference is that some of the invitees were in Doha for talks with Taliban negotiators.
On Thursday, Pakistan said it would host a three-day conference on Afghanistan from July 17 to July 19 to reinforce the efforts for peace in the neighbouring country.
The FO also denied allegations leveled by Vice President Amrullah Saleh that Pakistan Air Force provided aerial support to the Taliban who occupied Spin Boldak crossing.
The FO said the Afghan side had informed Pakistan of its intention to conduct air operations inside its territory opposite Chaman.
Pakistan, it said, responded positively to Afghanistan’s right to act in its territory. Despite close border operations, the FO said, measures were taken on the Pakistani side to safeguard its troops and population.
