HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Security forces foiled a Taliban attack on the Salma Dam in western Herat province, an official said on Saturday.

JilaniFarhad, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the Taliban wanted to stage a large-scale attack on the Salma Dam on Friday, but security forces pre-empted their assault.

He said the Taliban first mined the road to Salma Dam and then launched an attack on security checkpoints around Salma Dam, which was resisted by security forces.

He added that security forces ambushed the Taliban in a precautionary measure, killing two militants and injuring five others.

According to Farhad, security forces detected four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on the road to the dam.

“The Salma Dam is not a military target, it is a public welfare project for the people of Afghanistan”, he said.

He said special units and commando forces were stationed in the Chesht district to secure the dam.
