District police chief among 3 killed in Herat

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The police chief for 10th police district of the capital of western Herat province was killed during a battle with the Taliban militants, officials said Thursday.

Mahmod Rassouli, Herat police spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Taliban militants stormed the headquarters of 10th police district of Herat city on Wednesday night.

He said that Wahid Ahmad Kahistani and two soldiers succumbed in hospital after being wounded during the battle with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, Jailani Farhad, Herat governor’s spokesman said that Taliban militants hiding in civilian homes fired on Afghan forces in Herat city around 11pm last night.

He said that Afghan forces responded to the Taliban attack.

Herat governor is currently in frontline of conflict for managing the battle with against the Taliban, he said.

On the other hand, a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi said that police chief of 10th police district was along with six other soldiers killed in the battle.

Afghan forces and the Taliban are engaging in heavy clashes in parts of Herat city since the last several days.
