PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan has renewed its call for the immediate release of Afghanistan’s frozen assets.
The war-torn country could face economic collapse if the Da Afghanistan Bank funds were not unblocked, the Pakistani foreign minister warned..
Shah Mahmood Qureshi told reporters in Islamabad on Saturday Islamabad would host an extraordinary session of the OUC Council of Foreign Ministers on Dec 19.
The objective behind the event is to highlight the need for urgent assistance and mobilisation of resources to avert a humanitarian crisis and economic collapse in Afghanistan.
“If we don’t pay attention, half of Afghanistan’s population or 22.8 million people can face food shortages and 3.2 million children may face malnutrition,” he said.
Qureshi added that given the gravity of the current situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan was hosting the meeting.
The situation, if not addressed, would have dire consequences for Afghanistan, its neighbours and the whole region, the foreign minister said.
The EU high representative on foreign affairs and special representatives of the US, China, Russia, France and the UK have also been invited to the session.
