Food, fuel & gold prices up in Kabul markets

KABUL (Pajhwok): As a result of Afghani depreciation against US dollar, food prices rose by more than eight percent, ghee price by five percent and gold price by more than nine percent in Kabul markets.

Haji Zirak, a spokesman for money changers union in Sara-i-Shahzad, said: “Unfortunately, this is the first time in the history of Afghanistan and the value of afghani has fallen so low against the dollar and this is the matter of huge concern.”

Hasibullah Noori, a spokesman for Da Afghanistan Bank, told Pajhwok Afghan News that effort had been made to re-stabilize the afghani against foreign currencies. But the value of afghani has not yet increased against dollar.

<strong>Decrease in value of afghani by 8.4pc against US dollar</strong>

Haji Hussain, owner of Sadaqat Money Exchange Service in Sara-i-Shazada Market in Kabul said that one dollar accounted for 103 afghani and 1,000 Pakistani rupees for 550afs.

<strong>8.6pc increase in food price</strong>

Zamari Safi, head of the Food Traders Association in Kabul, said today compare to last week, the wholesale price of 49kg Kazakhi flour price increased from 2,250afs to 2,400afs, 49 Indian sugar from 3,000afs to 2,350afs, 16 liters of Malaysian ghee from 2,650afs to 2,900afs, 24kg Pakistani rice from 2,400afs, to 2,600afs.

He said one kilograms of Indonesia green tea price increase for 320afs to 400afs and the same quantity African black tea price increased from 350afs to 400afs.

Food prices had risen following the appreciation of the dollar against the afghani, he said.

Hamid Sufizada, a retailer in Dahni Bagh Market, said the retail price of 49kg of Kazakh flour was 2,450afs, 24kg of Pakistani rice 2,640afs, 49 kilograms of Indian sugar accounted for 3,300afs, 16 litres of Malysian cooking oil for 2,950afs, a kilogram of Indonesian tea at 450afs and one kilogram of black African tea accounted for 450afs.

<strong>Gold price also increased to more than 9pc</strong>

Mohammad Javid, a jeweler in Lyci Maryam Market, said today compared to last week the price of one gram of Arabian gold increased from 4,300afs to 4,300afs and the same quantity of Russian variety from 3,400afs to 3,700afs.

<strong>Fuel price increased by 5.5pc</strong>

A worker of the Ahmadyar fuel station, said the price of one liter of Petrol had risen from 76afs to 79afs and a litter of diesel had risen from 68afs to 73afs.

But, Mohammad Sharif, a liquefied gas seller in Kulula Pushta area of Kabul, said the price of a kilogram of the commodity stood at 85afs, the same rate of last week.
