KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Police in northern Kunduz province say the provincial prison has not been attacked by Daesh or Islamic State militants and the escaped prisoners have been recaptured.

On Friday, there were reports circulating in social media that IS militants had attacked the Kunduz prison and some prisoners had fled.

Police chief Maulvi Azizullah Omar told Pajhwok Afghan News that no attack had taken place on the prison by Daesh or any other militant group.

He said that prisoners had gone on strike a few days ago and a government delegation has been appointed to look into the matter.

He said the delegation included court director, deputy police chief, deputy governor and intelligence agency member.

“The delegation visited the prison, met prisoners and released some of the inmates,” he added.

The police chief said after the release of some inmates, the jailed Taliban members in another block went on strike and demanded to be released.

He added: “When a person brought food to the block of these Mujahideen, these Mujahideen came out of the block. Guards sitting in the prison tower also fired in the air, but six prisoners escaped to a nearby village and they were recaptured later.”

He said the prison was currently under control and the problem had been resolved.
