KABUL (Pajhwok): The European Commission has openly supported membership of Ukraine into the bloc, calling the country under Russian occupation “one of us”.

Welcoming Ukraine’s talks with Russia, European Commissioner Ursula van der Leyen told euronews on Sunday  that she no longer had “any trust” in Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Leyen previously had announced that 27 member states of the European Union have shut their airspace to Russian planes and that pro-Kremlin media outlets, including Russia Today and Sputnik, were no longer allowed to broadcast ‘toxic and destructive propaganda’ in EU territory.

This comes as for the first time in history, the 27 member states of EU have decided to send weapons to Ukraine. Meanwhile, a source told Reuters that weapons worth 450 million euros would be sent to Ukraine.

In part of her speech, Leyen said, “We never wanted this war, neither was Ukraine, President Putin started and led the war.”

Commenting on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, Ursula von der Leyen said that Brussels has long called for Ukraine to join the bloc and considers Ukraine “one of its members”.

About financial and armed support to Ukraine as well as giving refuge to Ukrainian people, she said that solidarity with Ukraine was strong.

Leyen said that the seizure of assets of the Central Bank of Russia and the suspension of access of some Russian banks to the SWIFT banking system, are among the provisions of the third package of sanctions proposed to the leaders of the European Union.

Ukraine, a democratic nation of 44 million people, won independence from Moscow in 1991 at the fall of the Soviet Union and has pushed to join the NATO Western military alliance and the EU, goals Russia vehemently opposes.

Today is fourth day of Russian invasion of Ukraine that has provoked widespread political, strategic and economic reactions from various countries in the world.

European Commission president said that Brussels is preparing a plan for Ukrainian refugees as the European Union was prepared for different options.

However, Ukrainian President VolodymyrZelenskyy during a phone contact with British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson called the next 24 hours a critical period for Ukraine.
