Ukraine war in no one’s interest: Chinese president

KABUL (Pajhwok): China has underlined the need for an immediate end to the Ukraine war, saying the hostilities are in one’s interest.

During a video call with his US counterpart Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping asked NATO to launch talks with Russia.

Without blaming Russia for the invasion, Xi called for negotiations on ending the conflict, avoiding civilian casualties and preventing a humanitarian crisis.

In the call, lasting nearly two hours, Biden waned China would pay a massive price if it directly aided Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Al Jazeera cited a statement from the Chinese foreign ministry, in which Xi asked the US and NATO conduct talks with Russia to solve the “crux” of the Ukraine crisis and address Moscow’s security concerns.

Beijing urged powerful capitals around the globe to respect each other, reject the Cold War mentality and refrain from bloc confrontation.

Biden informed Xi of the implications and consequences if China lent material support to Russia in the war in Ukraine, the White House said.
