KABUL (Pajhwok):  The United Nations Security Council has asked the Afghan government to reopen high schools for girls without delay.

The powerful 15-member council voiced its deep concern over the Taliban’s decision denying girls access to high school education.

In a statement on Sunday, the UN body said; “The members of the Security Council reaffirmed the right to education for all Afghans, including girls.”

Soon after reopening last week, the Taliban ordered girls’ high schools closed until further notice, sparking knee-jerk reactions from the global fraternity.

Following the Taliban’s decision, the United States scrapped talks with the new Afghan rulers in Doha on important economic issues.

According to Reuters, the Security Council asked UN Special Representative Deborah Lyons to engage with relevant Afghan authorities and stakeholders on the issue and report back on progress.
