Iran also welcomes ban on narcotics in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran has also welcomed a decree banning poppy cultivation and drug use in Afghanistan, saying it is ready to co-operate in cultivation of alternative crops and agriculture development.

The Taliban announced on Sunday a ban on the cultivation of narcotics in Afghanistan, the world's biggest opium producer.

“All Afghans are informed that from now on, cultivation of poppy has been strictly prohibited across the country,” according to an order from the Taliban's supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada.

Anyone who violates the order by growing poppy, their cultivation will be eradicated and will be treated according to Sharia law.

Iranian embassy in Kabul welcomed the Islamic Emirate’s ban on narcotics, saying that Iran would cooperate with Afghanistan in the areas of alternative cultivation and agricultural production.

Afghanistan is currently the world's largest producer of narcotics and the international community has spent billions of dollars over the past two decades to stop poppy cultivation in the country.
