UN, Iran condemn rising violence in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has denounced condemned a series of bomb explosions across Afghanistan, causing dozens of deaths and wounding many others.

At least 33 worshippers were killed when an explosion struck a mosque shortly after the Friday prayers in northeastern Kunduz province as.

More than 40 others were injured, the Taliban’s interim government said.

Guterres extended his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a swift recovery to those injured, his spokesman said.

“Attacks against civilians and civilian objects, including mosques, are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law,” Eri Kaneko added.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh also condemned the explosion at the Maulvi Sikandar mosque.

Khatibzadeh, referring to a wave of terrorist attacks in Afghanistan over the past few days, slammed the escalation of violence as a source of deep concern.

According to IRNA, he wished divine mercy for the martyrs and patience and blessings for the bereaved families.

“The attack on the Sunni mosque in Kunduz, which followed an attack on a Shia mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif, clearly shows the evil goals of the terrorists serving as mercenaries for foreigners, who are seeking to create a civil war in Afghanistan,” he remarked.
